First, let me thank you for your service at a time when those in the military were often disdained. I lived through those years as a civilian and saw the shameful way many of your fellow citizens treated the military. I wonder if it pains you to see another Vietnam veteran who disparaged the service of those he fought with now a prominent member of the Cabinet, participating in sensitive negotiations with other countries.

I have so many questions. How did you manage being a mom in the military while on active duty?

It seems very little, if anything, is now limiting what women can do in the military. Although I wonder if having women in combat is really a good thing, as long as it does not make combat operations less effective and it’s still a choice for women, I don’t object. I do, however, object to any woman being forced into a combat situation by a draft or a change in policy during her time in service. You enlisted. For you the military was a choice you made. I think it should remain a choice for women. What do you think?
