…quences for those who are left behind — the reasons that precipitate the act make it excusable. So, I have nothing but compassion for anyone who chooses to end their own life and I cannot reasonably hold it against them. I suspect very strongly that God is even more compassionate than me in this respect. There is certainly no Biblical reference I can point to that suggests that suicide is an unforgivable sin that results in eternal damnation. The few Christians who still hold to this view ought to keep it to themselves.
I agree. I have had close relationships with three people who have chosen to end their lives — a neighbor, a close friend, and an estranged adopted daughter. All were in acute emotional pain and the first two were also in physical pain. I have committed each of them to the only just judge, a judge who loved each enough to give his own life to redeem them.
