I also have an addictive personality. Alcoholism ran in my family and because my grandfather was an alcoholic, I saw how miserable it had made his family’s life. I decided as a child I would never drink. It helped I didn’t like the taste of alcohol. I also couldn’t see any good reason to learn to like something I didn’t when it had ruined people in my family. It’s much easier to stop addictions before they gain power over your life.

I never tried drugs, either, because I saw how they could wreck my life. I chose friends with similar behaviors and we had much more fun engaging in hobbies or games together. We probably had more fun that the kids who were drinking. Of course, back when I was a teen, drugs were not readily available and no one in my high school that I knew used them. The more popular kids got drunk together when they were seniors.

I’ve always been glad I was young at a time when social pressure to use addictive drugs was not as intense as it is now. I feel for young people growing up today — and their parents.
