I began my homeschool adventure using only library resources for the first two weeks, since we were traveling and expecting to return home where I was teaching English composition once a week in the children’s private school. Back in 1988 homeschooling was just getting off the ground in California, but we had many friends who were pioneering as homeschoolers. I was actually delighted when we got stuck in Seattle and had a chance and a good excuse to start our new adventure.

The library supplied our need for math books until we could get home and pick up our own materials. But back then there was little that was especially for homeschoolers at the library. Even now, back in California, I’ve never been aware of any programs just for homeschooler in our local libraries. However, there are many library programs with creative activities open to all children during the after school and weekend hours. I’m sure many homeschool families participate in these.
