I was blessed to have very caring parents who did all they could to help me be successful. Mom made my prom dress and wedding dress. She typed my high school papers in the days before computers. She encouraged me to bring my friends home and made sure there were refreshments. I had curfews. I could go on, but I won’t. I wish everyone could have parents as caring as mine. I’m very sorry you didn’t.

Of course, we also had disagreements about permission to do this and that. I was not allowed to go to a drive-in movie with my boyfriend, for example, and I was once denied permission to go to a party in junior high that my best friend got to go to. My mom didn’t know the parents and neither did the parents of my friends who had also been invited. My mom called them all and found they weren’t letting their kids go, either. Mom cared where I went and with whom. I often thought she was too strict, but now I understand.
