I wish I had known all this 17 years ago. Although our friend had a good emotional support system, he had financial troubles we didn’t know about and he perceived himself to have a terminal illness he didn't tell us about until the night he came to say goodbye. Of course, we didn’t know that’s what the visit was about until the next day when he was found dead. He must have absolutely made up his mind by the time he came by but he didn’t tell us what he was thinking because he knew we would try to stop him.
Even if I had known everything you stated in your article, it still may not have made a difference. I wasn’t until a few years after his death that I took my Stephen Ministry training and learned how to determine if someone is suicidal and how seriously they are about killing themselves. I also would have known it would have been OK to talk about it.
