Internet research on symptoms can provide possibilities one can ask a doctor about, but one should not diagnose oneself and skip the doctor. Our good friend diagnosed himself, decided he had a brain tumor and shot himself. He didn’t bother to go to a doctor, even though after he died I saw an appointment card for a neurologist in his room.

He had no health insurance and had not managed his money well and didn’t want to “burden” others. Mostly, though, he prided himself on his brilliant ability to solve problems. He was very intelligent. I’m sure the thought that his brain might deteriorate made him prefer death. I only wish he’d seen a doctor to make sure before taking such a drastic step. And I wish he’d told us his fears so that we might have tried to dissuade him and help him.
