My Serbian husband felt some of this when his family escaped from Yugoslavia in 1950 and arrived in Canada. By 1959 they were able to come to the US as Canadian citizens and seemed to find more acceptance here. The biggest barrier in Los Angeles for my father-in-law being able to work as an architect as he had in Serbia, was not being proficient enough in in English to pass the licensing test. A few years later he did.
