My pilgrimage
My mother named me Barbara thinking it meant “gift of God.” I’ve never been sure what made her think that. I found out the truth when I took Latin. It literally means barbarian, foreigner, or stranger. And that’s how I’ve always felt — like I don’t really belong here.
