When I was in elementary school I was shy around strangers and in class. I began to come out of it in high school an even compete in speech events. As a child, I was mostly surrounded by adults in my family who did not pressure me to be anyone I wasn’t. They gave me lots of positive attention. I think that helped me become more confident.
But at UCLA, in classes of 200 plus students, I was hesitant to raise my hand. I preferred to write my papers and exams without the professors actually knowing who I was.
