When you are 14 getting any job where you can earn money is exciting. My first job when I was 16 was at a cheap dress shop in a mall. The idea of having a job and earning money appealed to me, but the job didn’t. My cousin had worked there and gotten me the job. I’m not interested in fashion.

I don’t mind working hard, but I hated having to try to find something to make me look like I was working when there was no more work to do on a slow day. I was too dumb then to know that I might have told the boss all the clothes were folded and asked him if there was any other job I could do.

I hated having to try to upsell people who had already told me they were there for a specific item and wanted to get in and out quickly. My boss got mad because I did not try to sell her something else. I’m good with customers, but I don’t like to annoy them just because the boss is looking.

I was glad when the summer ended, and with it the job.
